Home Accessibility Program for Independence (HAPI)
Grants and low interest loans to make the home accessible for people with disabilities. Limited funding is available.
Eligible Borrowers
Low and moderate income City of Pittsburgh homeowners or renters with disabilities, and landlords undertaking modifications for income-qualified disabled tenants.Eligible Properties
City of Pittsburgh home or residential rental property that is the primary residence of the disabled person.Eligible Home Accessibility Modifications
The following is a list of the items that can be funded through HAPI. Other items may be considered at the discretion of the HAPI Consortium.
General Accessibility Items:
- Exterior lift
- Exterior ramps
- Interior stairglide
- Modifying doors - changing hinge system, rebuilding existing door frame and replacing the door
- Visual doorbells and/or visual smoke alarms
- Relocating environmental controls e.g. light switches, electrical outlets, heat controls to accessible heights
- Enlarge and/or modify the existing bath, e.g. grab bars, turning radius, widening doors
- Creating new first floor bath
- Safety/accessibility modification, e.g. vent gas cooktops, counter oven, appliances with front controls, lowering kitchen counters.
