Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh
Business Development
Mainstreets Pittsburgh
Funded in part by: Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development
The mission of the Mainstreets Pittsburgh Program is to serve as the neighborhoods’ liaison between possibility and reality. The program aims to accomplish this mission by providing responsible, incremental and innovative programs that will:
- Develop a sense of community and unified purpose among participating business districts, while encouraging a process of self-determination and ultimate sustainability;
- Protect the physical environment of Pittsburgh’s neighborhood business districts through both historic preservation and new development;
- Enhance the economic rejuvenation of both commerce and property;
- Promote the unique identity and character of neighborhood business districts while improving the overall perception of the City; and
- Advocate for Citywide polices and programs that strengthen Pittsburgh’s neighborhood business districts.
This annual application process serves as a community’s introduction to participating in the Mainstreets Pittsburgh program, either as an affiliate or as a funded Mainstreets Pittsburgh District. Designated Mainstreets Pittsburgh Districts will be eligible for up to five years of decreasing operational funds to implement the Main Street four-point approach as trademarked by the National Historic Trust and offered through the URA’s partnership with Main Street Pennsylvania.
The Mainstreets Pittsburgh Program is funded by, and actively partners with, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and the City of Pittsburgh. Funds awarded through the Mainstreets Pittsburgh program must be used to support activities that: 1) target revitalization activities within the boundaries of the Mainstreets District; 2) leverage additional funds, primarily through the development of sustainable, private investment; and 3) impact the target district through measurable goals that support each of the four points of the Mainstreets Pittsburgh program.
This section explains the Mainstreets Pittsburgh levels of service, program components, eligibility and how your organization can apply for assistance.
