Get to Know: Constance Mayer
Job title: Real Estate Transaction Specialist
What you actually do: I shepherd purchases and sales of publicly-owned land. Like everyone at the URA, I do a bunch of “other duties as assigned.” I will attempt anything.
Years at URA: Six months
Best thing about working at the URA: I have found my tribe – so many intelligent people who are really committed to -- and living -- their values!
Favorite project/Most satisfying moment in career: Since I was a little kid, I believed my calling was to serve others, especially our most vulnerable and marginalized -- so I find deep satisfaction in working.
Education: Master’s in Fine Arts, Writing; Master’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Strategy & Sustainability; Bachelor of Arts in Writing; Bachelor of Science in Psychology; honors certificates in Art History and African-American Studies – University of Pittsburgh (I love to learn)
Where you were before the URA: teaching English at Pitt; Programs and Operations Director at Dress for Success Pittsburgh; Director of Human Services at Catholic Charities; Volunteer Coordinator at Animal Rescue League (a career in nonprofits)
If you were boss for the day: I would work with our leadership to create a transparent, equitable pay scale and adjust everyone accordingly.
The Boss says: "Constance has quickly become an integral part of the Real Estate Department, and the URA. She is hard working, thoughtful, and insightful, and has jumped into a variety of tasks and projects. We are glad she is a part of our team (even if she makes us digitally archive our old paper files)." -Nathan Clark, director, Real Estate
If you weren't at the URA you'd be...volunteering.
First job: Running to the neighborhood store for seniors; delivering newspapers
Favorite Pittsburgh spot: Anywhere along our beautiful rivers -- I can see why Native Americans settled here
Favorite restaurant: Soba
What you like to do when not at work: Anything fitness oriented – lifting, rowing, biking, kayaking, running, hiking
Secret vice(s): All things Peloton (I did a Peloton hack and use the app)…and house music
What three words describe you best: Compassionate, intelligent, trustworthy. People always say I am the first person they would call in a crisis.
What you’re currently watching on Netflix: RuPaul’s Drag Race – I never get tired of past seasons.
What song do you have on infinite repeat?: Old-skool soulful house playlists on Spotify
Three things always in your refrigerator: Humanely raised organic eggs; organic bananas; grass-fed butter
Three people (living or dead) you’d like to have dinner with: Ahh, just three?? Michelle Obama, Brian Cox, Frida Kahlo
Actress who would play you in a movie: What others have said: Drew Barrymore; What I like to believe: Sandra Bullock
People would be surprised to know that I...don’t have a television (maybe they wouldn’t be surprised by that?).
Family: My spouse, Joy, has a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and is a director at UPMC Western Psych.
Pets: Brazilian Mastiff, bully mix, and chihuahua; two cats (that came with the house … long story)
