URA Accepting Applications for the Home Accessibility Program for Independence

June 22, 2026

The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) is now accepting applications for the Home Accessibility Program for Independence (HAPI), which offers grants to homeowners and landlords to make accessibility modifications, enabling residents with physical disabilities to remain safely and independently in their homes. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. on July 31, 2026.

The program provides grants between $1,000 to $15,000 for income-eligible homeowners and up to $7,500 per unit for eligible landlords to complete improvements that make homes more safe, functional and accessible.

"For many residents, accessibility improvements can make the difference between remaining comfortably at home and having to relocate," said Quianna Wasler, URA Chief Housing Officer. "Through HAPI, we're helping Pittsburgh residents make modifications that remove physical barriers and improve quality of life and allow more people to age in place. We’re grateful to the Pennsylvania Housing Financing Agency for supporting this year’s application round through the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund."

Accessible modifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Exterior ramps
  • Chair gliders or lifts
  • Door widening
  • Bathroom modifications
  • Lowered kitchen counters
  • Sliding shelves
  • Visual doorbells
  • Visual phone signalers

Interested applicants are encouraged to view the HAPI page to learn more about program eligibility requirements and to submit an application.
